BFA Studio Art Application Requirements

BFA Studio Art Application Requirements:

  • STAR Audit Report, cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Statement of interest
  • 10 images, labeled (title, date, medium, dimensions) with project descriptions
  • Reference from one faculty in the Department of Art 
  • Minimum of 62 credits completed toward current degree
  • Minimum of 15 credits of 1000-2000 level ARTS classes and three credits of 300-400 level ARTS classes
  • Minimum of 6 credits of 2000-level ARTH classes

Students will be informed via email of the outcome of the admission process. 

Students may reapply as many times as necessary. Students who have not gained admission to the BFA program may graduate with a BA degree.

All applicants will be required to request access to a Special Canvas Course where they will upload required materials.  To request access contact Professor John Dickinson at johnd85@nmsu.edu *Please allow up to 48 hours for a response.

Late applications are not accepted.

 

Application Dates      

Admission to the BFA is conducted in the fall and spring semesters only; the admission process is not available during summer terms.  

 

GPA Requirements

Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in all art courses to be eligible for consideration.

Written Statement Requirements 

Typed statement will be between 150-300 words in length and address your interest in the BFA degree and its application to your career. The following questions should be addressed: 

  • What are your current areas of interest? Are you interested in concentrating in a specific studio discipline?
  • What particular ideas/themes/concepts are you interested in pursuing?
  • What are your strengths and weaknesses? Please address the images in your portfolio specifically.
  • What are your career goals?

 

Portfolio Requirements 

Portfolios will include images of a total of 10 individual works submitted as a single PDF file.

You will need to select artwork that demonstrates the following: strong technical proficiency, understanding of design and composition, creativity and exploration, and idea development. 

All the pieces in your portfolio should be finished work that presents fully developed ideas. All work should be submitted as a PDF portfolio.  To create a portfolio, insert images of 10 individual works into a Word document. Label each work with: title, date, medium, dimensions, course for which the work was created, and a brief description of the assignment.  

 

Reference from one faculty in the Department of Art

You will need to ask one of the professors in the Art Department to be a reference. Just need a confirmation for support. (NO letter or forms)
