While medication is critical for people who require it to function, it can cause side effects and discomfort. The need to have medication as a part of daily life in order to sustain the body is a convoluted compromise. The act of taking medicine becomes mundane and allows for the ignoring of the complex place it takes in the lives of those who need it. In my work I hope to express the mundane yet necessary reality that a body is needed in order to continue supporting life, but it is not always a source of comfort.
By creating jewelry that reflects its place, I heighten the monotonous nature of taking medicine, as well as creating a physical reminder to its presence. My work is trying to make visible something that many people choose to hide, the struggle of living in a body that doesn’t always seem to be on your side.
