A Key to the City
The Center for Urban History of East Central Europe
From January-June of 2018, Rachel Stevens lived in Lviv, Ukraine under the auspices of the Fulbright program.  Her research focused on Lviv’s former Jewish community, which once exceeded 160,000 people, but was destroyed during the Nazi occupation during WW2.  Stevens’ 3 projects reveals diverse aspects of Lviv’s former Jewish community.  The heart of the exhibition are 75 clear class synagogue keys, cast from an iron original.  The installation commemorates the 75th anniversary of the liquidation of the Janowska Death Camp and Lwow Ghetto, where many of Stevens relatives perished.  The exhibition, A Key to the City, is on view through August of 2018.
