Eagerness for experimentation, growth and the development of the mind along with mastering skills of craftsmanship are aims for students of the printmaking program at New Mexico State University. Students accomplish these goals through the development of new and old skills, intellectual challenges and educating the student towards the ability to express visual statements and ideas in a direct, honest and creative manner. Personal attention to the needs and progression of the student’s personal aesthetic is given in a humanistic and pragmatic manner. Excitement and continued pursuit of one’s life work and ability to continue after formal schooling are other critical goals of the printmaking program. Thus art history and the humanities are stressed in the student’s education, as well as technical craftsmanship. Instruction in these areas gives an awareness of the rich depth and multiple levels that content can achieve, as well as ways to reach those goals through the format of the print medium.
