I recall a lecture by Victor Papanek, the head of the design when I was studying at the Kansas City Art Institute, who stated that designers should be generalists. This notion best describes my educational goal for my graphic design majors here at NMSU, who I teach to understand what it means to be a "generalist designer." This entails strong training in the fundamentals of two-dimensional design within the discipline of this important profession of visual art communication. I want my students to discover a love of the processes involved in this important career choice. I also stress the idea that students are part of an important team, and help them understand the collaborative process of problem solving through the visual arts. It is also vital for the student to understand the complexities of various media and computer tools, so emphasis is placed upon students experiencing the varied computer software programs, which they use as tools to integrate their layout experiences. In the student’s final year, he or she will have the opportunity to refine their skills in advanced classes that deal with more complex projects, such as portfolio development. The graphic design curriculum, although very specific in class enrollment requirements, also allows the student to experience elective studio course work as well as the rigorous art history component found within the NMSU Art department.
