| The Art Department's Book Arts 394-595 class, taught by Professor Mark Nero with TA Elizabeth Hillmann, has been chosen by Graphic Design USA to receive their 2008 American Inhouse Design Award for the design and production of a catalog for the University Art Gallery. The catalog was a class project to produce a catalog for the 2007 Regional Invitational Exhibition at the NMSU Gallery, which was sponsored by the Andy Warhol Foundation. The award was given by Graphic Design USA, and represents a top 10% standing for NMSU designers in a field of over 5,000 entrants. Professor Nero submitted the catalog to the competition in the name of the class, and is proud to congratulate all the students on a fine job which has brought honor to them, the Art Department, and New Mexico State University.

| JOSHUA ROSE RETROSPECTIVE |
| A new exhibition by New Mexico State University art professor Joshua Rose, titled "Joshua Rose Retrospective" opened to a large crowd on Jan. 25, and will run through Feb. 22 in the University Art Gallery. The exhibition showcases more than 50 large scale paintings spanning 30 years of Rose's career. John Lawson, art gallery director, said the exhibition is like a survey of art and of Rose's creativity. "ItÕs very good work to see," Lawson said. "Many don't get a chance to see 30 years of art."
Lawson said while many think an artist does the same thing over and over, this exhibition shows how artists can express themselves in different ways and how their styles change over time. "One painting leads to another painting and to another," Lawson said. "There isn't one painting that isn't related to all paintings. This is a really impressive show because of the amount of work and the size of the work. I think some people will be overwhelmed by the size, the color and the amount."
RoseÕs most recent work is on display at the Zane Bennett Contemporary Art gallery in Santa Fe, N.M. That exhibition, titled "Full Circle," will run through Feb. 29.
The University Gallery is located in the D. W. Williams Art Center at University Avenue and Solano Drive. The gallery is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. For more information call (575) 646-2545. |

| - - IN MEMORIAM - - |
| Muralist and popular New Mexico State University art professor Kenneth Barrick, taught thousands of students and is responsible for many familiar
landmarks on campus. Barrick died Dec. 18 at his Las Cruces home. He was
94.
"Ken Barrick was a long-serving and greatly valued member of the NMSU
family," NMSU President Michael Martin said.
"His work both as a teacher and as an artist has made this a better
university. The wonderful murals he painted will inspire students, faculty
and visitors for many years to come. We've lost a truly outstanding Aggie."
His paintings hang in private collections and museums in 22 states and
Canada, and were featured in a show at the state Capitol in Santa Fe. He
was also known for developing a formula for potassium silicate paint for
outdoor murals that can withstand the harsh Southwestern elements.
Barrick earned a master's degree from the University of Iowa, where he
studied under famed American artist Grant Wood. He moved to Las Cruces in
1949 and became a faculty member, and later Head of the Art Department.
Las Cruces gallery owner Linda Lundeen said Barrick nurtured Las Cruces'
burgeoning art community by teaching both amateur artists during night and
weekend classes and thousands of university art students.
