This page will allow you to navigate through a number of professional research projects in Brazil and Portugal and field trips taken in New Mexico with many of the students who have participated in my various seminar courses.
The art projects developed throughout my career include a doctoral field research with the Bororo Indians of Central Brazil, as well as later projects with the Retablo collection of New Mexico State University and an extended research project focusing on sacred art in my home state of Minas Gerais, Brazil and its Portuguese precedent. These doctoral and pos-doctoral research projects have been supported by the National Council of Research and Technology (CNPQ), Brazil; The Rockefeller Foundation; The National Endownment of the Arts, (NEH), USA and the College of Arts and Sciences of New Mexico State University among others.
Each semester, I organize field trips with students who are taking upper-level seminars in art history. These trips provide an opportuntiy to visit and experience sites related to the subjects being studied. My seminar courses deal with the Missions of the Southwest, Mystic Art in the Americas and Women and Art. Our field trips are camping excursions which average 3 to 5 days.In the past we have visited different regions of New Mexico such as El Morro National Monument, Chaco Canyon, Taos, Jemez Springs as well as other areas.
