The Pata Viva Farm is a working model farm utilizing sustainable agricultural techniques. The farm is part of the MESA Project, with a vision to provide food for the communities around Las Cruces, NM in collaboration with architects, scientists, culinary and visual artists in the community. Two of these contributors are alumni or soon-to-be alumni from our Department of Art: Lea WiseSurguy-Sophiliazo, a recent MFA graduate whose thesis work focused on sustainability and social practices and Shelly White, a 3-dimensional artist, graduating with her BFA this year. With their efforts and the work of their colleagues, ArtPlace recently awarded the MESA Project $250,000 in support of their vision for teaching others how to grow food using sustainable agricultural practices.
